Mineral Oil/ Alcohol Lava Lamp - Add Turpentine
Spy007's Turpentine Trick
The following pictures are of Spy007's Home Made Lava Lamp.
Thanks Spy for the great pics and the helpful tip about turpentine!
Here they are!
All made from the instructions on this website [OozingGoo.com]. The blue one was the first lamp I ever made. It flows very well after being on for about 4 minutes. The
lava seperates though, and the oil based paint sticks to the bottom.
The blue one is a little cloudy because I dropped it. It has since cleared up. As you can see I had
problems with the oil paint lava. The green one has problems getting the lava to stick together.
The trick to getting the lava to stick together is turpentine. If you add the right amount of turpentine
the lava blobs will combine upon contact. Too little or too much turpentine results in blobs that jdut
bounce off each other. The green lamp has too much turpentine, so the balls of lava won't combine. I
haven't done enough experimenting to know what the "right amount" is.
I would love to try oil based dye instead of oil based paint for the coloring. I can't find the dye
anywhere though.
